Volunteer Info

The page is written to educate the citizens of Spotsylvania County on the differences between Career & Volunteer personnel.

What do the volunteers do for us (citizens)?

Q1: How qualified are the Fire & EMS volunteers?

A1: All career & volunteer, Fire & EMS providers, must maintain the same certifications and meet all state and local requirements.

Q2: What happens when all resources in the county are busy?

A2: All-calls go out to the volunteers and are paged or called on the radio to staff additional units. There is always an plethora of volunteers that can staff additional units. If volunteers can't staff additional units fast enough, neighboring counties/cities are called in to help such as Fredericksburg, Stafford, Orange, and Caroline.

Why should I join a fire or rescue organization?

Q1: Why would I volunteer instead of going career?

A1: As a volunteer, you can pursue a professional career in another area and still help others as an EMT/Firefighter. You can learn many skills with no cost to you and give as much time as you have to give.

I volunteer because I enjoy the camaraderie that is built with the other members of the department. This is a way to give back to the community by helping your neighbors and other people that come to Spotsylvania to work or visit. It is a nice personal feeling to know that you have been able to assist someone in their time of need. Also as a volunteer you can keep up your skills as an EMS provider. I feel that we have one of the best combination fire and EMS systems in the state, and I am proud to be a part of this system.
--Kevin Dillard, EMT-I, CVF&R

I volunteer because it is a unique and rewarding experience. Monitarily I don't get paid, but the simple "Thank yous" for aiding someone in an emergency is worth every second of my shift. Nothing gives me a greater sense of purpose and that "warm fuzzy feeling" inside than volunteering on the rescue squad.
--Jessica Carpenter, EMT-B, CVF&R

I am a volunteer in Fire/EMS because I want to help others in their time of need. Anyone can give money to organizations/causes they believe in, but only few have the ability to deal with Fire/EMS situations. I believe in giving my time, more so than my money, to help others. It takes a great deal of personal strength from within to push myself when situations are difficult. You have to rise above and make smart decisions, because I am in charge of someone else's life.
